The risk of business relationships being personal
It really put me back on my heels.
I thought, That's bizarre. Why would you perceive that the relationships in your
life are going to be used against you? And more importantly, why would you guide your life as if that were going to
happen.
Maybe there's 1 person out of 100 who would use some
personal info about you to their advantage and/or to your disadvantage. But think about the other 99 people. If that fear guided your life, there are 99 people you could have developed great relationships with. You'd miss so many opportunities.
Given that so many of us spend so much time in the work environment, if you showed up at work and were surrounded only by individuals who you kept at arms-length, where your relationships were purely transactional in nature, I just can't imagine that you'd have much success in your career or joy in your life.

Then again it's take just one bad situation for someone to use the personall stuff in a work environment to really make you hesitant to be open with others at work again.

It depends on what part of your personal life they know about. If they know you happen to like things that could potentially spoil business relationships, and tell your business partners about them, that could ruin the whole thing.

This sounds like compartmentalizing. You can live your biz life and your personal life and your church life.... Or you can live your life and if you are honest in all areas, what is there to worry about?

Seems to me that being authentic and open about who you are, what makes you tick (gradually, as part of relationship building) is the best defense to being abused in a business relationship. Sometimes the "secret" life is the connection that makes the difference. My spiritual life is a bit unconventional, and it is essential to my business. I stopped hiding it, to the benefit of many who want to share that experience. Still, certain boundaries are helpful: a simple assessment of not casting your pearls before swine. And know you are stronger than the occasional swine that slips through. (Nothing against pigs, by the way. Fond of 'em.)

As odd as I think it is, I have a friend who owns her own business, got a contract, then lost that contract when the woman she negotiated with realized who her husband was. Of course she had a gripe against the husband's previous business, which had nothing to do with my friend. They're all in court now, and it's a shame. Should it happen; nope. Does it happen; absolutely.
