Do you need a business school network?
I once asked Keith if going to business school "for the network" was really necessary if you were to, say, read Never Eat Alone and just proactively and consistently built the relationships you need. He convinced me that affiliations with schools and other organizations can speed the growth of your network beyond belief and that the relationships he's built through the Harvard Business School network have been so valuable that going to B-school was definitely valuable for him. But he also agreed that most people not earning an MBA could make up a ton of ground by diligently building relationships for success. On the flipside, MBA students are missing the boat if they rely solely on their B-school's network to make their careers. They should be reaching out to people outside their immediate communities before, during, and after earning an MBA.
Rajesh Setty suggests the same in his new e-book "When You Can't Earn An MBA."
Download it for free from his blog, Life Beyond Code.
And be sure to read the part called "10 Things You Have that [MBA students] Don't" on pages 17 and 18. It's the most provocative part.

Great article on concepts for those that can't/won't go to grad school...
Keep up the great work!

I ran across this article yesterday after reading Ian's posting. Although the titular question didn't really get answered, I found the connections that were shown very interesting.

Very interesting post! I am currently putting together a personal MBA program with 40 or more audio books. The concept is called "MBA on the Run". The idea is to experience the real business world while listening to great business authors on an Ipod. As crazy as it may sound, listening to Keith's Audio book while sitting in a Starbucks is an amazing experience. Watching people communicate in a coffee house setting is fascinating and really makes Keith's ideas come to life.
I am currently listening to Seth Godin's "Purple Cow" while walking through a historic town nearby. It quickly becomes apparent which businesses are the Purple Cows.
As I finish each audio book I am interviewing a real world business person and putting together a podcast that will compliment the content of the book.
Foe Keith's book I will interview a co-worker who is a great networker and it should be interesting to learn his unique perspective.
Keith... Great Book... Great Blog!

As the de facto administrator of the Security Fix blog, I've spent many an hour deleting spammy links left in the comments section -
- comments that usually lead back to the same kinds of Web sites you most commonly see advertised in junk e-mail.
