It's still all about people

Even when you're trying to create the world's largest supercomputer.

Matt Blumberg, a great friend of mine from Yale, just launched GridRepublic, which allows anyone with a computer to "run a screensaver that allows their computers to work on public-interest research projects" when they're not using their computers.

They got the technology down. Now it's all about getting people to contribute, to share their passion by picking the projects they want to generously offer their unused computer resources to.

See how you can contribute at GridRepublic.org

Keith:

It's good to know that this effort has gotten larger. Seti@Home has been doing this for years and I believe there was also a breast cancer web site that pooled "grid computing" resources.

In this day and time of wasted resources, I'm glad to see this positive use of unused resources.

In the developed world, virtually every profession makes use of computers.
However, certain professional and academic disciplines have evolved that
specialize in techniques to construct, program, and use computers.
Terminology for different professional disciplines is still somewhat fluid and
new fields emerge from time to time
