Tip 90 – Talk to Your Boss About Your Next Job

Guess what? If you’ve built a strong relationship with your boss, you should be talking to him or her about your next job. It’s stupid to pretend you will be at your current job forever when everybody’s thinking about their next move...

Boola Boola

I got a funny email from Stephanie, one of my employees, today. The subject line was “connecting at Whole Foods.” She is not feeling very well and it’s getting colder in L.A. so she was wearing her Yale sweatpants for the first time since she moved here four months ago. She walked from her home to Whole Foods and was getting ready to sit down with her taco lunch when someone about her age saw her pants and said, “Hey, did you go to Yale?”  “Yes,” she said, “Did you?” They exchanged class years, but she learned this guy had left before graduation to become a successful race car driver. Then Stephanie said, “Can I sit down with you?” I’ve taught her well.Janicecouch This is her not at Whole Foods.

Tip 89 – Drive-By Flattery

If someone you know has done amazing work, don’t just thank or compliment the person. Tell his or her boss. I call this drive-by flattery and do it all the time. It will increase the person’s political capital at work...

What's Your BQ?

If you are interested in branding, check out the book What’s Your BQ? by my friend Sandra Sellani. She says the key for any brand is differentiation. Her book covers the success strategies of nearly three dozen brands including Netflix. There is also a quiz which will help you determine whether your strategy, alignment, communication, and execution are working.

Tip 88 Don't Hide from Unhappy Clients

Customers and clients can be a great source of feedback and insight. But it’s not going to be smiles, smiles, smiles all the time. You must also talk to your dissatisfied customers or clients constantly. This works for co-workers and personal relationships, too. When someone is angry with us, it is easy to be embarrassed and say, “I don’t want to deal with that.” No!...

9/11 Anniversary

From my friend Mark Goulston:

The best way to commemorate 9/11
is to take a moment of silence
and then be as productive as hell.

-Tim Reuben
Reuben, Raucher & Blum

Six years ago today, life as we know it in the United States changed forever and America finally joined the rest of the world in realizing that nobody is immune to harm from determined, fanatical enemies. According to Reuben, “On that day many of us stopped, became depressed and went into a funk which is exactly what our enemies wanted. And to the extent that such funk of unproductivity continued, our enemies won.”

As you go about your busy and productive day today, keep in mind that living with life never being the same again, doesn’t mean that life is necessarily that different from what it was. There are and will be plenty of opportunities to laugh and love our families, enjoy our work and feel good about our country, the world and our future.

Share the ways you are planning or have commemorated 9/11 at Usable Insight blog.

Tip 87 How to Handle Your Toxic Boss

Many people have asked me what to do about their toxic bosses. You should know that while 50% of people seem like jerks, only 10% actually are. The remaining 40% are just insecure. They have personal issues and feel unsafe. They tweak people because they expect negative reactions and results...
