Tip 105 – Drive With Purpose

People often ask me where I get the energy to be constantly connecting. There are several answers – blending, working out, and very importantly, knowing that my mission is to help others realize that through relationships, life can be full of joy and success.

So, I wanted to share this tip from Jon Gordon’s book The Energy Bus:

“There’s a story about when President Lyndon Johnson visited NASA and as he was walking the halls he came across a janitor who was cleaning up a storm, like the Energizer bunny with a mop in his hand. The president walked over to the janitor and told him he was the best janitor he had ever seen and the janitor replied, ‘Sir, I’m not just a janitor. I helped put a man on the moon.’…

America Needs a CMO

On the political front, I just got back from Europe and it was quite upsetting relative to our image there. Been frustrated lately and thought I'd write about it, with some business perspective on a political situation. As a former CMO several times over and now founder of a recent PAC, I felt compelled to offer some thoughts in The Huffington Post.

Tip 104 – Build Your Foundation

My biggest issue has always been my lack of focus, so one of my New Year’s resolutions is to step back in so many places, particularly my businesses, to assure I have the solid footing and grounding I need. Yoga is a nice proxy for life. As I do yoga and thoughts of the day race through my mind, I begin to stagger and cannot keep my balance…

Tip 103 – Your Actions Always Tell The Truth

I know what it's like to feel broke. I grew up that way. If you worry about your personal finances, read Larry Winget’s new book You're Broke Because You Want To Be: How to STOP Getting By and START Getting Ahead. Larry and I had a ball when we met on CNBC’s Millionaire Inside. He tells it to you straight, which is why I like him. You’ll see what I mean from this excerpt on getting your actions in alignment with your priorities:

“Money is a dead giveaway of what is important in anyone’s life. What do your bank statement and credit card statements say about you? I was working with one family when I asked the father if he loved his son. He said of course he did. I told him he didn’t. I told him he loved his cigarettes more than he loved his son because he spent more on his cigarettes than he did making sure his son had a secure future. I then took his cigarettes from him, threw them on the floor, and stomped them flat with my cowboy boot. He was pissed! I loved it…”

My Goals for 2008

Have the conviction to put your goals in writing. Mine are:

I will participate in one major spiritual activity a week. Could be church, could be meditation etc.

I'd like to see my blood pressure go from 140/90 to 130/70 without meds.

Go from a 1 goal rated polo rated player to a 0 this year.

Raise 100k this year for the new Political Action Committee PAC 'Our Leadership Our Future.'

Be Friends With Your Doctor -- Here's Why

Last week, I was insisting on making sure I had one more good polo match in before the end of the year so I called my coach and got a lesson. It was a cold, windy night and my horse was acting a little strange. Instead of saying something, I thought, “Oh, I can handle it.” About a half hour into the lesson, the horse tripped onto his front and I go flying off and landed on my shoulder. It didn’t feel like it was the end of the world but I sat it off for a little bit. I asked a gentleman there to please take a look to see if he could tell if anything was wrong. The look on his face was kind of telling. He said, “Get yourself to the hospital immediately.  You have a 2 inch bone sticking out of your shoulder.”  It was certainly helpful to have a great relationship with my primary care physician. I called him and asked him where I should go for the best orthopedic shoulder guys. I get into the hospital and got amazing care – and morphine. The shots are showing AC separation. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Getting it operated on tomorrow!
