Tip 109 Mistakes Were Made, Now Recover

William F. Buckley Jr. passed away this week. I was lucky to know him and he taught me some important life lessons. When I was an undergrad at Yale, I ran for City Council of New Haven. I lost, but after the election, Buckley sent me a note and invited me to his home. We shared wine, talked politics and he even played the harpsichord. We discussed starting a foundation to support some of Yale’s student groups. At least, I thought we did. Brimming with pride, I went back to school and started pitching hard to alumni who would be interested in the foundation Buckley and I were starting. When one donor mentioned the foundation to Buckley, he said, “What foundation?” He didn’t remember our conversation the way I did. The whole setup fell apart. By not confirming with absolute clarity the ideas that Buckley and I had discussed, I had harmed my reputation among powerful people and the Yale community.

Here’s what I learned about how to recover from a serious personal or professional mistake...

Tip 108 Beware of Snark-Infested Waters

Kaira Sturdivant Rouda is not just a good friend of mine, but someone I deeply respect as a brilliant marketer who walks everything that I believe in. During our recent conversation on real estate, personal branding and passions (http://www.keithferrazzi.com/podcasts/ferrazzisturdivant.mp3), we even discovered that we both had “Spazz” as a nickname. Here’s some advice from her new book Real You Incorporated: 8 Essentials for Women Entrepreneurs:

“Almost every day someone says something to me they would never say to a man. I was recently with a male attorney who was prepping me before testimony at a deposition. He told me, ‘You need to act more professional, like a real president.’ He was referring, he said, to the fact that I smile, don’t dress in traditional suits, and, ‘well, other things.’ I told him, ‘I am a real president and this is how I look. Period.’

Remember, you're on a personal mission. To get where you need to go, separate yourself from negative influencers. The more real you become, the more polarizing you'll find yourself to be. If you're making waves and pursuing your passions, people notice. Real people and snarks. Your job is to distinguish between the two, and keep the snarks from bringing you down.”

Check out her book and www.RealYouIncorporated.com for more valuable insights.

Tip 107 If You Are Single, You Are In Sales

We’re all in sales. Do you want a raise or a promotion?  You’re in sales. Do you have a new idea at work?  You’re in sales. Are you single? You are DEFINITELY in sales. Even though I was a CMO at Deloitte and then Starwood (where I also led sales for awhile), in fact I was really terrible at applying this "sales" wisdom in bars when I was single. But the rules are the same, whether you’re selling a house, the services of your start-up, or yourself...

Regret-Free Life

Two of my favorite people – Dr. Mark Goulston and Karen Salmansohn – can be seen in the same video about how to live a regret-free life. It's a quick 8-minute video of Karen "at work" as a Sirius radio host on BE HAPPY DAMMIT as she talks to Mark, author of Get Out Of Your Own Way At Work.
